Visa, immigration, and customs information
Visa Requirements
Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.
Sierra Leone requires most international visitors to obtain a visa or electronic travel authorization before arrival. The country has implemented an online visa system to streamline the application process for eligible nationalities.
Very limited visa-free access to Sierra Leone
Citizens of ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) member countries can enter visa-free under regional agreements. Valid passport and proof of citizenship required. All other nationalities require a visa.
Online visa application system available for most nationalities
Cost: Approximately USD $80-160 depending on visa type and duration (single vs multiple entry)
Print approved eVisa and present upon arrival. Ensure passport is valid for at least 6 months from entry date. Business visas require invitation letter from Sierra Leone-based company or organization.
Limited availability for certain circumstances
Visa on arrival is unreliable and may result in entry denial. Always obtain visa before travel unless you are an ECOWAS citizen. Airport processing can be lengthy and approval is not guaranteed.
Arrival Process
The entry process at Freetown International Airport involves several standard immigration and customs procedures. Flights arrive at Lungi International Airport, located across the bay from Freetown city center, requiring additional ferry or helicopter transfer.

Tips for Smooth Entry
Customs & Duty-Free
Sierra Leone customs regulations govern what items travelers can bring into the country duty-free and what must be declared or is prohibited. Customs officers may inspect luggage, and non-compliance can result in fines, confiscation, or legal consequences.
Prohibited Items
- Illegal drugs and narcotics - Severe penalties including lengthy imprisonment
- Firearms and ammunition - Unless proper permits obtained in advance
- Counterfeit goods and pirated media - Subject to confiscation
- Pornographic materials - Prohibited under Sierra Leone law
- Endangered species products - Including ivory, certain animal skins, and protected wildlife items
- Explosives and incendiary devices - Strictly prohibited
- Hazardous chemicals and toxic substances - Without proper authorization
Restricted Items
- Medications - Prescription drugs should be in original containers with prescription documentation. Large quantities may require medical certificate
- Professional equipment - Cameras, drones, and professional filming equipment may require permits or temporary import documentation
- Cultural artifacts and minerals - Export of diamonds, gold, and cultural items strictly regulated; import of such items should be properly documented
- Plants and plant products - May require phytosanitary certificates
- Meat and dairy products - Subject to agricultural inspection and may require health certificates
Health Requirements
Sierra Leone has mandatory health requirements for entry, primarily focused on preventing the spread of infectious diseases. Health screening occurs before immigration processing.
Required Vaccinations
- Yellow Fever - Mandatory for all travelers aged 9 months and older, regardless of country of origin. Must be administered at least 10 days before arrival. International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card) must be presented at health screening desk.
Recommended Vaccinations
- Hepatitis A and B - Recommended for all travelers
- Typhoid - Recommended, especially for those visiting rural areas or eating outside major hotels
- Meningitis - Recommended during dry season (November to May)
- Rabies - Consider for extended stays or if working with animals
- Routine vaccinations - Ensure MMR, DTP, and polio vaccinations are up to date
- Malaria prophylaxis - Malaria is endemic throughout Sierra Leone; antimalarial medication strongly recommended
Health Insurance
Comprehensive travel health insurance with emergency medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended. Medical facilities in Sierra Leone are limited, and serious medical conditions may require evacuation to neighboring countries or Europe. Ensure your insurance covers medical treatment, hospitalization, and emergency evacuation. Carry proof of insurance and emergency contact numbers.

Special Situations
Additional requirements for specific circumstances.
Children must have their own passport and visa (if required based on nationality). Minors under 18 traveling without both parents should carry notarized parental consent letters from absent parent(s), including contact information and authorization for travel. Birth certificates showing parental relationship may be requested. For unaccompanied minors, special arrangements with airlines and immigration must be made in advance. Yellow fever vaccination is required for children over 9 months old.
Importing pets to Sierra Leone requires advance planning. Required documents include: valid rabies vaccination certificate (administered at least 30 days before travel but not more than 12 months), veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days of travel, import permit from Sierra Leone Ministry of Agriculture. Pets may be subject to quarantine inspection upon arrival. Certain breeds may be restricted. Contact the Sierra Leone Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security well in advance (at least 6-8 weeks) to obtain import permits and current requirements.
Tourist visas typically allow stays of 30-90 days. For longer stays, apply for visa extension at the Immigration Headquarters in Freetown before your current visa expires. Extensions require: valid passport, current visa, application form, passport photos, proof of accommodation, proof of financial means, and applicable fees. Processing takes several days to weeks. For stays exceeding 90 days, consider applying for a long-term visa (business, work, or residence permit) which requires sponsorship from a Sierra Leone entity. Overstaying your visa can result in fines, detention, and deportation.
Business visitors require a business visa (available as eVisa). Required documents include: invitation letter from Sierra Leone company or organization on official letterhead, letter from your employer stating purpose of visit, proof of business registration, and conference/meeting documentation if applicable. Business visa may be single or multiple entry. Those intending to work or receive payment in Sierra Leone need a work permit in addition to visa, which requires employer sponsorship and Ministry of Labour approval.
Journalists, photographers, and film crews require special media accreditation in addition to visa. Contact the Sierra Leone Ministry of Information and Communications in advance to obtain press credentials. Professional filming equipment may require temporary import permits. Drone use requires special authorization from Civil Aviation Authority. Failure to obtain proper media accreditation can result in equipment confiscation and deportation.
Travelers with dual nationality including Sierra Leone citizenship must enter and exit Sierra Leone using their Sierra Leone passport. Contact the Sierra Leone embassy or consulate if you need to obtain or renew a Sierra Leone passport. Dual nationals cannot use visa exemptions based on their other nationality.
