Freetown Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed December 2024. Always verify with official government sources and the Sierra Leone Directorate of Immigration before traveling, as entry requirements are subject to change.
Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, welcomes international visitors through Freetown International Airport (Lungi International Airport). Entry requirements vary depending on nationality, with most travelers requiring either a visa or electronic travel authorization before arrival. Sierra Leone has modernized its entry process in recent years, implementing an online visa system to facilitate smoother arrivals for tourists and business visitors. Upon arrival at Freetown International Airport, travelers will proceed through immigration control where they must present valid travel documents, proof of vaccination (particularly yellow fever), and any required visas or authorizations. The immigration process is generally straightforward, though wait times can vary depending on flight arrivals. It's essential to have all documentation prepared and readily accessible to ensure a smooth entry experience. Travelers should be aware that Sierra Leone has specific health requirements, particularly regarding yellow fever vaccination, which is mandatory for all visitors. Additionally, customs regulations must be followed carefully, and certain items require declaration or are prohibited. Planning ahead and obtaining necessary documents well before travel is strongly recommended, as processing times can vary and requirements may change based on global health situations.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Sierra Leone requires most international visitors to obtain a visa or electronic travel authorization before arrival. The country has implemented an online visa system to streamline the application process for eligible nationalities.

Visa-Free Entry
Varies by bilateral agreement, typically 30-90 days

Very limited visa-free access to Sierra Leone

Includes
ECOWAS member states (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Togo)

Citizens of ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) member countries can enter visa-free under regional agreements. Valid passport and proof of citizenship required. All other nationalities require a visa.

Electronic Visa (eVisa)
Typically 30 days single entry or 90 days multiple entry

Online visa application system available for most nationalities

Includes
United States United Kingdom Canada Australia New Zealand All EU member states China India South Africa Most other countries not in ECOWAS
How to Apply: Apply online through the official Sierra Leone eVisa portal (www.immigration.gov.sl) at least 5-7 business days before travel. Upload required documents including passport copy, photograph, yellow fever certificate, and proof of accommodation. Processing typically takes 3-5 business days.
Cost: Approximately USD $80-160 depending on visa type and duration (single vs multiple entry)

Print approved eVisa and present upon arrival. Ensure passport is valid for at least 6 months from entry date. Business visas require invitation letter from Sierra Leone-based company or organization.

Visa on Arrival
Typically 30 days

Limited availability for certain circumstances

How to Apply: Generally not recommended or widely available. Some business travelers with official invitations may qualify, but advance eVisa application is strongly preferred.

Visa on arrival is unreliable and may result in entry denial. Always obtain visa before travel unless you are an ECOWAS citizen. Airport processing can be lengthy and approval is not guaranteed.

Arrival Process

The entry process at Freetown International Airport involves several standard immigration and customs procedures. Flights arrive at Lungi International Airport, located across the bay from Freetown city center, requiring additional ferry or helicopter transfer.

1
Arrival and Disembarkation
After landing, follow signs to the immigration hall. Have your passport, visa/eVisa printout, and yellow fever certificate readily accessible.
2

Present your yellow fever vaccination certificate at the health desk before proceeding to immigration. This is mandatory for all travelers regardless of origin country.
3
Immigration Control

4

5
Customs Declaration
Pass through customs inspection. Declare any items exceeding duty-free allowances, large amounts of currency, or restricted items. Bags may be subject to inspection.
6
Exit and Ground Transportation
Exit the arrivals hall and arrange transportation to Freetown city. Options include helicopter transfer (fastest), ferry service, or water taxi across the bay.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Arrive with multiple printed copies of your eVisa, yellow fever certificate, and accommodation confirmations. Internet access may be limited if you need to retrieve documents electronically.
Keep small denomination US dollars or Leones readily available for airport fees, transportation, and tips. Credit card acceptance is limited.
Be patient during the immigration process as it can be time-consuming, especially when multiple international flights arrive simultaneously.
Arrange airport transfer in advance, particularly if arriving at night. Pre-book helicopter or ferry service to Freetown city for convenience and safety.
Dress respectfully and maintain a polite, cooperative demeanor with immigration and customs officials.
Have contact information for your accommodation and any local contacts written down in case phone or internet access is unavailable.
Ensure your yellow fever vaccination is recorded in an official International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card). Digital certificates may not be accepted.

Sierra Leone customs regulations govern what items travelers can bring into the country duty-free and what must be declared or is prohibited. Customs officers may inspect luggage, and non-compliance can result in fines, confiscation, or legal consequences.

Must be 18 years or older. Excessive quantities may be subject to duty or confiscation.
Tobacco
200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250 grams of tobacco

Health Requirements

Sierra Leone has mandatory health requirements for entry, primarily focused on preventing the spread of infectious diseases. Health screening occurs before immigration processing.

  • Malaria prophylaxis - Malaria is endemic throughout Sierra Leone; antimalarial medication strongly recommended

Health Insurance

Comprehensive travel health insurance with emergency medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended. Medical facilities in Sierra Leone are limited, and serious medical conditions may require evacuation to neighboring countries or Europe. Ensure your insurance covers medical treatment, hospitalization, and emergency evacuation. Carry proof of insurance and emergency contact numbers.

Current Health Requirements: Health requirements may change based on global disease outbreaks and public health situations. During or after disease outbreaks (such as COVID-19, Ebola, etc.), additional screening, testing, quarantine, or vaccination requirements may be implemented. Check with the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health and Sanitation and your country's travel health advisory service for current requirements before travel. Some countries may require specific health declarations or pre-arrival health forms.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own passport and visa (if required based on nationality). Minors under 18 traveling without both parents should carry notarized parental consent letters from absent parent(s), including contact information and authorization for travel. Birth certificates showing parental relationship may be requested. For unaccompanied minors, special arrangements with airlines and immigration must be made in advance. Yellow fever vaccination is required for children over 9 months old.

Traveling with Pets

Importing pets to Sierra Leone requires advance planning. Required documents include: valid rabies vaccination certificate (administered at least 30 days before travel but not more than 12 months), veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days of travel, import permit from Sierra Leone Ministry of Agriculture. Pets may be subject to quarantine inspection upon arrival. Certain breeds may be restricted. Contact the Sierra Leone Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security well in advance (at least 6-8 weeks) to obtain import permits and current requirements.

Extended Stays

Tourist visas typically allow stays of 30-90 days. For longer stays, apply for visa extension at the Immigration Headquarters in Freetown before your current visa expires. Extensions require: valid passport, current visa, application form, passport photos, proof of accommodation, proof of financial means, and applicable fees. Processing takes several days to weeks. For stays exceeding 90 days, consider applying for a long-term visa (business, work, or residence permit) which requires sponsorship from a Sierra Leone entity. Overstaying your visa can result in fines, detention, and deportation.

Business Travelers

Business visitors require a business visa (available as eVisa). Required documents include: invitation letter from Sierra Leone company or organization on official letterhead, letter from your employer stating purpose of visit, proof of business registration, and conference/meeting documentation if applicable. Business visa may be single or multiple entry. Those intending to work or receive payment in Sierra Leone need a work permit in addition to visa, which requires employer sponsorship and Ministry of Labour approval.

Journalists and Media

Journalists, photographers, and film crews require special media accreditation in addition to visa. Contact the Sierra Leone Ministry of Information and Communications in advance to obtain press credentials. Professional filming equipment may require temporary import permits. Drone use requires special authorization from Civil Aviation Authority. Failure to obtain proper media accreditation can result in equipment confiscation and deportation.

Dual Nationals

Travelers with dual nationality including Sierra Leone citizenship must enter and exit Sierra Leone using their Sierra Leone passport. Contact the Sierra Leone embassy or consulate if you need to obtain or renew a Sierra Leone passport. Dual nationals cannot use visa exemptions based on their other nationality.
